Grandma’s Buttons

Good Morning…….

The weather here in the Pennsylvania mountains is rapidly changing……..I guess winter is really coming………I had hoped Mother Nature would have changed her mind this year and just let Fall last till Spring!….sigh……I would love to have lunch with Mother Nature……see what makes her tick!

Well,  today I decided to try and make “Rhyme or Reason” out of my sewing room……My mom had also been cleaning out her sewing room and had given me several boxes of “Stuff”……one of the boxes was antique buttons! She told me she had them for decades……many were her mothers! wow, my grandmothers buttons! I remember as a little girl I used to play with them…..the rhinestone buttons became rings and I would string the pearls and make grand necklaces and prance around as if I were royalty….my grandmother would laugh and call me “Queen Louisa”…….(my given name is a derivative of it) …. her sister was Louisa….then I would have to tie them into bunches making sure the same buttons were all attached…..it would take me hours!

As you might have guessed by now, I’m kind of a history buff especially Family History! I think its so important to be able to tell grandchildren about their heritage, the people who carved the roads we travel in our lives ……..good or bad……uneventful or  mind-blowing…..infamous or heroic…..doesn’t matter we are still family and DNA is just a  road sign that says somehow in some form you have been here before……..

So after going through the box with loving hands and a few chuckles I decided what I would do with them…….

I’m going to make heart ornaments for Christmas and cover the front with, yup you guessed it Grandma’s Buttons!

The picture of the one I just finished, below, is a crocheted heart my mom made…..Now three generations of women will have contributed to this ornament for the next generation, I am going to have my granddaughter sew one of my buttons onto the hearts so it will then be four generations.  Hopefully she will follow the tradition and have her child do the same…….

These will be special ornaments that I will give all my Grandchildren, (including the boys)…. Anna’s Great-great Grandchildren, along with the story on a special card I will attach and date……hopefully one day their children will ask about their heritage and they can hold a little bit of it in their hands…….

……….and…..smile…..and………..think……………….

Thanks Grandma!
